Richardson Complex Update

State Lunatic Asylum, Buffalo, NY
For those of you in the Buffalo, New York area, there’s going to be a public meeting regarding the Richardson Olmstead Complex on Wednesday, April 16th. The meeting will be at 6PM at the Buffalo and Eerie County Historical Society, 25 Nottingham Court, in Buffalo. That’s about two months away, but mark your calendars…

Presented will be findings, recommendations, updates and plans on stabilization and redevelopment. In the notice were some mentions of stabilization work and planning already underway, most notably the patching of a roof and this:

“The connector link between Buildings 39 and 40 is also the focus of attention. An engineering firm has evaluated the link and is preparing construction documents that will lead to stabilizing the connector from further collapse. Design work is also underway to protect further deterioration at Building 43, the former kitchen building located behind the central twin towers building. An electrical survey was completed and the RCC Board is working on a plan to reconnect electricity. This will enable the installation of lighting and smoke and heat detection systems.”

Speaking of the Buffalo asylum, if you’re like me and love historical images of these places, check out the American Memory collection of Buffalo Asylum images. You can find old photos of a few other asylums too if you take a little time to browse their archives.
