Surprisingly, the slightly modified\u00a0Kirkbride\u00a0plan building\u00a0pictured above was located in Manhattan! Unfortunately, there aren&#8217;t a lot of images of the building online. The best I&#8217;ve seen so far are located here: <a title=\"Triborough Bridge &amp; New York State Hospital\" href=\"http:\/\/iarchives.nysed.gov\/PubImageWeb\/getCollectionImagesServlet?id=67911\" target=\"_blank\">aerial photos<\/a> (look near the curve of the bridge) \u2014 although those sadly don&#8217;t reveal the entire building.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1863,\u00a0the hospital\u00a0was originally called the New York City Asylum for the Insane and stood on\u00a0Ward&#8217;s Island as\u00a0part of a larger\u00a0hospital complex\u00a0predominantly serving\u00a0newly arrived immigrants.\u00a0When the State Department of Mental Hygiene took over its administration in 1899, it\u00a0became Manhattan State Hospital. When exactly the Kirkbride was built I don&#8217;t yet know.
