It gave me the idea to check for more stories concerning state hospitals from Time&#8217;s\u00a0extensive 86 year archive. While there weren&#8217;t any amazing finds, there were\u00a0a few\u00a0interesting items&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Medicine in a Mad House - Time Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,769988,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Medicine in a Mad House<\/a> (1934) &#8211;\u00a0Tells the story of how\u00a0a patient filled <a title=\"Danvers State Hospital\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkbridebuildings.com\/buildings\/danvers\/\">Danvers State Hospital<\/a>&#8216;s kitchen sugar cans with cockroach poison, killing another patient and making 13 others seriously ill.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Government Inspiration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,847725,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Government Inspiration<\/a> (1936) &#8211; This story\u00a0about government sponsored art during the New Deal starts off with a description of a mural painted at <a title=\"Elgin State Hospital\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkbridebuildings.com\/buildings\/elgin\/\">Elgin State Hospital<\/a>. I just thought it was interesting that the artists were instructed to &#8220;use only the softest shades of primary colors, to &#8216;avoid all exciting combinations.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Medicine: Unhappy Anniversary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,888729,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Unhappy Anniversary<\/a> (1952) &#8211; The sad story of Miss X, Topeka State Hospital&#8217;s oldest resident in 1952.
