As it stands today, the building has no wings, but there are\u00a0clues it used to have some. An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topozone.com\/map.asp?lat=35.2753&amp;lon=-89.0267&amp;datum=nad27&amp;u=4&amp;layer=DRG&amp;size=l&amp;s=24\" title=\"Western State Hospital\">older topographic map<\/a> shows\u00a0what appears to be that old, familiar\u00a0outline. Also, the structure\u00a0was completed\u00a0in 1889, putting it within the tail end of the\u00a0Kirkbride era. And lastly, <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.webshots.com\/album\/144243588bSQOtr?start=0\" title=\"Bolivar Asylum\">these\u00a0photos<\/a>\u00a0show there was definitely something\u00a0torn down on\u00a0either side of the old administration building. Check out these images in particular where you can make out traces of what was torn down:<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.webshots.com\/photo\/1144252411030020802SzwEsD\" class=\"postlink\">Image One<\/a><br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.webshots.com\/photo\/1144251566030020802wOdszQ\" class=\"postlink\">Image Two<\/a><br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.webshots.com\/photo\/1144254331030020802eJJGVE\" class=\"postlink\">Image Three<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still not completely sure this was a Kirkbride, but I\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t post about it if I didn&#8217;t think there&#8217;s a really good chance it was. Finding out about\u00a0a Kirkbride\u00a0not mentioned in the usual sources is always a nice surprise. It gives you hope that there are more out there.\u00a0Conservatively, I&#8217;d\u00a0estimate the total count of Kirkbride\u00a0asylums ever built at somewhere\u00a0around fifty. But the real count could be more like seventy. Finds like this make me\u00a0think the larger\u00a0number\u00a0is more likely.
