It looks very much like a small Kirkbride Plan asylum located in Hopewell Township, New Jersey.\u00a0 Genealogy Trails lists\u00a0the institution\u00a0as being\u00a0<a TITLE=\"New Jersey Institutions Listing in 1899\" HREF=\"http:\/\/genealogytrails.com\/njer\/institutionsin1899.html\">open in 1899<\/a>. However,\u00a0Philadelphia Architects\u00a0&amp; Buildings\u00a0attributes its design to architect\u00a0<a TITLE=\"Thomas Edward Ash - Projects\" HREF=\"http:\/\/www.philadelphiabuildings.org\/pab\/app\/ar_display_projects.cfm\/21428\">Thomas Edward Ash<\/a>, born in 1888. Either somebody&#8217;s got their data mixed up, or this particular building was added to the asylum much later than 1899.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unusual for a Kirkbride to have been built after the 1890s, but it&#8217;s not unheard of\u2014the one in Bangor, Maine was\u00a0completed in 1904 for example. It&#8217;s also\u00a0out of the ordinary\u00a0that a county asylum had\u00a0its own\u00a0Kirkbride building. The state governments had a sort of monopoly on\u00a0them because they\u00a0were the only entities (aside from the federal government) with\u00a0the necessary funds and\u00a0capabilities to\u00a0build such large, expensive\u00a0buildings. I\u00a0suppose the reason this one is pretty small is because the county had a comparitively meager budget at its disposal.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0don&#8217;t know if\u00a0this building still exists or not. If anyone from the area has any information on its status, please comment.
